Before starting a detoxification program, it is important to achieve optimal intestinal function.* Therefore, it is important to include a fiber formula such as Thorne's FiberMend® to promote the elimination of toxins from the body by binding toxins secreted by the liver into the intestine and preventing their reabsorption.*

The liver uses a two-phase detoxification method. In phase I, fat-soluble substances, including toxins, are converted by cytochrome p450 enzymes into intermediates, which, although they are now more soluble in water, are not yet ready for excretion. Then, in phase II, the intermediates created in phase I are attached to glutathione, sulfur, or methyl groups, which make them sufficiently water-soluble to be excreted from the liver with bile.*
